Nighttime Wedding Ceremony at Skirball Cultural Center
Most weddings are planned around daylight with sunset ceremonies and golden hour portraits, but this one at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles completely embraced the night, and it worked in the most beautiful way. The whole celebration took place after dark, which gave the entire day this moody, elevated feel that was both elegant and unexpected.
The ceremony happened in Skirball’s outdoor courtyard, surrounded by its signature concrete walls and modern lines. One of the things I love most about photographing weddings here is the dramatic staircase that sits right behind the ceremony space. The couple made their entrance down that staircase, and it added such a cool, cinematic moment to the start of the evening. I’ve worked at Skirball before, and every time I’m reminded of how unique this space is — it’s clean and architectural, but still lets the emotion and energy of the day shine through.
Because everything happened at night, lighting played a big role in setting the tone. The ceremony lighting was soft and warm, which made it feel intimate and intentional. Then, during dinner, the space shifted to a red glow that felt vibrant and celebratory. Later, once the dancing started, the lighting changed again — cooler purple tones, more movement, and a vibe that felt like a full-on party. It was such a fun transition to capture, and it really brought the photos to life.
This wedding was the perfect example of how lighting, architecture, and timing can come together to create something that feels fresh and personal. There’s just something special about a wedding that leans into the evening hours. It’s a little less traditional, a little more atmospheric, and the photos end up having so much depth because of it.
